At ‘tales of animals past’ you will find a collection of stories and comments on the animals that inhabit our societies – or at least have inhabited our societies in the past. Inspired by the animal stories that find their way into today’s media, I will uncover and share tales of their ancestors.

As a student of history, I am studying the origins of comparative psychology and the ways in which animals occupied both scientific and therapeutic roles within the nineteenth-century asylum. Therefore, many of the stories on this site will discuss issues pertaining to this period, these locations and these objects of study. But, I assure the reader, that my writings will not solely be restricted to these areas, and will expand into the wonderous world of animals in all walks of life – the historical and the slightly more recent.
